Turkish iron ore imports declined sharply in January

The latest data released by TUIK suggests considerable drop in country's iron ore imports during the month of January this year.

ANKARA (Scrap Monster)The latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) suggests that the country’s iron ore imports dropped sharply during the month of January 2016.

The imports during the month totaled 599,226 tons, down considerably by 28% when compared with the imports during the same month a year ago. The Turkish iron ore imports had totaled 599,770 tons during January 2015. The value of iron ore imports by the country during January this year amounted to $37 million. The import value of iron ore by Turkey has dropped sharply by over 58% when matched with the previous year.

The largest supplier of iron ore to Turkey during Jan ’16 was Brazil. The imports from Brazil totaled 190,603 tons, accounting for nearly 32% of the total imports by the country during the month. The iron ore imports from Brazil were down by 58.23% year-on-year.

In second place was Russia with 174,998 tons, accounting for nearly 29% share of monthly imports by Turkey. The imports from Russia surged higher significantly by 360% over the previous year. The imports from the country had totaled only 38,184 tons during January last year. In third place was South Africa with 165,249 tons. Turkey had not imported iron ore from South Africa during Jan ’15.
