SHANGHAI, Mar. 28 (SMM) – Australia has beat Malaysia as top bauxite supplier to China, with imports from the latter down dramatically.
Malaysia’s three-month ban on bauxite mining sent China’s imports from the once top supplier down 54.3% month-on-month to 986,900 tonnes in February. Such plunge caused China’s total imports to tumble 39% from January to 3.22 million tonnes in February, customs data showed.
SMM attributes lower imports partly to production cuts at Chinese alumina producers, especially in Shandong.
Average CIF price of China’s bauxite imports was $49.92 per tonne in February, down 10.9% from a year ago and down 2.4% from a month ago.
