China’s appetite for imported bauxite will remain voracious in 2016 after a 53.86% spike in 2015, SMM predicts.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 2 (SMM) – China’s appetite for imported bauxite will remain voracious in 2016 after a 53.86% spike in 2015, SMM predicts.

SMM expects China’s output of alumina that relies on imported bauxite to grow to 20.4 million tonnes in 2016, and this boost demand for imported bauxite to 55 million tonnes.

Customs data showed that China imported 7.11 million tonnes of bauxite in December 2015, up 118.82% from a year ago, and imported 55.82 million tonnes in 2015. Alumina capacity at Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering Group expanded to 11 million-tpy, the main driver of China’s bauxite import growth.
