SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Senator Brant McCreadie has introduced a new bill aimed at curbing copper wire and scrap metal theft. The bill proposes huge jump in fines for scrap metal businesses found violating reporting requirements.

According to the Senator, the existing law has failed to curb theft of copper wire and other non ferrous metal across the island. The current system requires scrap metal dealers to obtain information from individuals looking to sell copper and other metals. However, the rising theft incidents clearly suggest that the provisions under the current law have failed to work. According to McCreadie, an additional layer of inspection is required to curb such thefts.

The new bill proposes that scrap metal businesses should not purchase ore receive non ferrous metal without first being inspected and certified by the Department of Public Works. All non ferrous property which is not accounted by this level of inspection will not be eligible for sale or delivery to scrap metal businesses.

As per Bill 232, the fines for businesses that violate reporting requirements will be increased from existing $1,000 to $100,000. In addition, business license of violators will be revoked with immediate effect.
