SHANGHAI, Jan. 8 (SMM) – A growing number of disqualified secondary lead producers halted operation in this past week due to stricter environmental protection inspection and thin profits, SMM understood.

More producers will shut down after January 20 with upcoming Chinese New Year holiday.

Rise in scrap battery prices narrowed profits at secondary lead producers. Average price of scrap motive batteries and automobile batteries (white shell) came in at 7,265 yuan per tonne and 6,760 yuan per tonne this week, up 9 yuan per tonne and 16 yuan per tonne, respectively. This grew smelting costs by 14-27 yuan per tonne.

Secondary lead prices were mainly at 12,550-12,750 yuan per tonne with average price at 12,650 yuan per tonne, falling 13 yuan per tonne from last week.
