Novelis reports major jump in use of recycled aluminum

Global aluminum major, Novelis Inc. has reported significant jump in use of recycled aluminum. The company has also reported considerable progress in efficient use of natural resources.

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): Global aluminum major, Novelis Inc. has reported significant jump in use of recycled aluminum. The company has also reported considerable progress in efficient use of natural resources. This is as per the recently published 2015 sustainability report.

According to the report, Novelis has achieved 49% recycled aluminum inputs at the end of fiscal 2015, significantly higher by 19 percentage points from 2007-2009. The water usage by its facilities has reduced by 22%. The company has nearly doubled its recycling capacity over the past five years, thereby reducing is greenhouse gas emissions by 13%.

Novelis’ initiatives to increased recycled input is expected to set new standards for aluminum recycling by saving 3.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. The opening of the new aluminum recycling facility in Nachterstedt, Germany will boost the company efforts to recycle more aluminum. The recycling facility is capable to process up to 400,000 metric tons of aluminum scrap every year.

The company has invested nearly $2 billion in the past five years to expand recycling and modernize facilities. These investments are aimed at improving recycled content of products and reduce carbon footprints. Novelis has also made significant investments at its facilities, especially in Brazil, towards improving water efficiency. Such enhancements have helped the company to achieve significant reduction in water intensity.

Novelis Inc. is the global leader in aluminum rolled products and the world's largest recycler of aluminum. The company operates in 11 countries, has approximately 11,500 employees. The company is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, part of the Aditya Birla Group, a multinational conglomerate based in Mumbai, India.
