China's aluminum consumption will peak in 2020 as new industrial applications will fuel demand growth of the light metal.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 21 (SMM) – China's aluminum consumption will peak in 2020 as new industrial applications will fuel demand growth of the light metal, cnstock.com quoted Wen Xianjun, vice president of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA) as saying in a recent forum.

Wen sees China’s aluminum consumption growing 7.2% to 32.8 million tonnes in 2016 and peaking at 44 million tonnes in 2020.

Despite slowing growth in traditional applications, new applications, such as lighter commercial vehicles, aluminum formwork, new energy vehicles and aircrafts, will become the new engines for aluminum demand growth, Wen pointed out.

China’s primary aluminum output grew 11.3% year-on-year to 26.46 million tonnes during the first ten months of this year, and aluminum semis output rose 10.6% year-on-year to 47.35 million tonnes in the same period, the media reported.
