Supply of Lead exceeded demand by 13 kt during Jan-Sep 2015

The global lead market has ended in a small surplus during the initial nine -month period of the year.

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): The global lead market has recorded a small surplus of 13,000 tonnes during January to September this year, as mentioned in the latest metals balances report published by the World Bureau of Metal Statistics (WBMS). It must be noted that the worldwide lead market had reported a deficit of 2,400 tonnes for the entire year 2014.

The global refined lead output during Jan-Sep ’15 declined by 6.9% over the previous year to 7,507 kt. This is inclusive of production from primary and secondary sources. The Chinese ouput fell sharply by 14.2%. Other major producing countries including Australia, Canada, Peru and the United States too recorded reduced output during the nine-month period.

The global lead demand during Jan-Sep ’15 has dropped by 548 kt from 8,042 kt in Jan-Sep ’14 to 7,494 kt during the corresponding nine-month period in 2015. The Chinese demand for the metal declined sharply by 13.7% over the previous year. Meantime, lead demand fell by 6.5% in the US and by 2.3% in the Europe. Overall global lead usage declined by 6.8% year-on-year.

The Chinese imports of lead contained in lead concentrates dropped nearly 3% during January to September this year to 679,000 tonnes.

According to the report, reported stocks of the metal at the end of September this year dropped by 119 kt when matched with the stock levels over the same period. The lead stocks held in LME warehouses registered decline of 60 kt.

The lead mine production during September 2015 alone totaled 325.4 kt, whereas refined lead metal production totaled 835.4 kt. The lead consumption during the month totaled 824.6 kt.
