US steel scrap exports up marginally in September

The steel scrap exports by the US during the month of September this year increased marginally, as per the latest statistics released by the Department of Commerce (DOC).

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): The steel scrap exports by the US during the month of September this year increased marginally, as per the latest statistics released by the Department of Commerce (DOC). According to government data, the steel scrap exports totaled 1.168 million tons during September this year.

The exports were up considerably by 17.3% when compared with the exports during the previous month. The country’s steel scrap exports during August this year had totaled 996,000 tons. The US steel scrap exports were up slightly when compared with the same month a year before. The exports were up marginally by 0.8% when matched with 1.159 million tons during September last year.

The largest importer of US scrap during the month of September this year was Turkey. The scrap imports by Turkey from the US totaled 457,000 tons, accounting for nearly 39% of the total scrap exports by the US during the month. The scrap exports to Turkey rose sharply by 22.7% over the previous year. The US had exported 372,000 tons of scrap to Turkey during September 2014.

In second place was Mexico with scrap steel imports from the US totaling to 155,000 tons. The exports to Mexico soared significantly higher by 76.3% year-on-year. The other main importers of US steel scrap were Korea (89,000 tons, down by 14.3% y-o-y) and India (80,000 tons, up 143.4% y-o-y).

The cumulative steel scrap exports by the country during the initial nine-month period of the year totaled 9.974 million tons.
