EUCLID (Scrap Monster): The data released by the Piqua Health and Sanitation Department indicates big jump in recycling participation. The in-house recycling service which commenced in May this year has seen 40% rise in residents participation. The recycling tonnage has also increased considerably over the six-month period, the data says.

According to Amy Welker, Director, Health and Sanitation Department, the huge jump in participation rate is a result of the various efforts undertaken by the Department to educate residents about the benefits of recycling. The Department also added that it would continue to encourage more residents to be part of the program. The residents who join the recycling services are provided with a 64-gallon recycling cart, it noted.

Welker stated that the Department is pleased by the tremendous rise in recycling participation. When compared with the corresponding six-month period in 2014, the solid waste tonnage has gone down significantly. Increased recycling has resulted in less solid waste generation, Welker noted. Incidentally, the recycling tonnage increased by almost 8% during the six-month period from May to October this year.

The increased recycling participation is believed to save cost to the city, as recycling costs less than taking the solid waste to landfills. The ultimate aim of the city is to maximize recycling participation by residents so that costs to landfills are minimized to the lowest possible levels. It will also help to sustain environment, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also creates additional job opportunities in recycling and manufacturing sectors.

The Piqua Sanitation Department is responsible for the collection of solid waste materials including refuse/trash, bulk items, yard waste, and recycling from residential houses, buildings and small businesses. The Sanitation Department provides weekly collection for these materials.
