Most Secondary Lead Smelters Shut in Jiangxi on Environmental Protection Crackdowns

SHANGHAI, Oct. 27 (SMM) – Only 2-3 secondary lead producers remain operational at present in Jiangxi due to stricter environmental protection inspections, SMM points out.

Secondary lead supply tightens while scrap battery supply is left healthy. As such, secondary lead in Jiangxi mainly traded at 11,900-11,950 yuan per tonne on October 27 with the lowest price up 100 yuan per tonne from October 26. Purchase prices of scrap motive batteries came at 7,400-7,450 yuan per tonne and 6,900-6,950 yuan per tonne for scrap automobile batteries (white shell), both down from yesterday.

More disqualified smelters will be closed due to stricter environmental protection inspections, cutting demand for scrap batteries and secondary lead. Consequently, scrap battery prices will enter downside track, boding ill for lead and secondary lead prices.
