ABU DHABI (Scrap Monster): Redeem, the Scottish firm specializing in mobile phone recycling and resale has decided to widely expand its operations in the Middle East and African region.

The company’s Dubai regional office has entered into major partnerships with three electronics multi-retailer brands- Vigin Megastore, iStyle and Plug Ins. As per the deal, the outlets of these retailers will collect used mobile phones from customers in return for gift and cash vouchers. The collected mobile phones will then be sold to Redeem. Nearly 40 retail outlets of the three retailers will participate in the program. Redeem expects to sign similar deals with two more retailers, which could take the total number of participating electronic retail outlets in the UAE to nearly 70. Also, the company is in talks to launch similar partnership ventures in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Egypt.

“Working with us, retailers are able to make an exciting offer to their customers – vouchers in return for the customers’ used phones – which helps to cement the customer relationship and sell further products and services,” said Redeem’s Middle East and North Africa head Husni El Assi.

Currently, mobile phone recycling is at its early stages in the region. According to surveys, over 67% of the handsets sold in the UAE during the second quarter of the current year were smartphones. The consumer inclination to upgrade to newer models of smartphones is expected to lead to high mobile recycling rates in the region. Globally, mobile phone recycling market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17% by 2019.

Redeem provides mobile network operators and other businesses handling electronic devices a dedicated, complete  recycling and recommerce solution.
