ABU DHABI (Scrap Monster): The can collection drive held on Saturday has resulted in collection of over 5,000 kilograms of aluminum across the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The mega event held under the sponsorship of Emirates Environment Group (EEG), had participation from over 250 groups spread across the country.

According to Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson, EEG, the event was being conducted to encourage people to fulfill their duties to the environment. With this, EEG has achieved 72% of its target set for 2015. The aluminum cans collected till date this year has totaled 19,521 kilograms. EEG has set a collection target of 27,000 kilograms of aluminum cans for the entire year 2015.

The Saturday event witnessed increased participation by government entities, hotels and corporate firms. A new collection point was organized at Al Mamzar Beach Park, Dubai, which aided collection of cans from adjoining emirate of Sharjah. This was in addition to previous locations at Zaabeel Park and Al Barsha Park. Collections from other emirates were organized through locations in Sharjah Radisson Blu Resort, Ras Al Khaimah Public Works Department, Ajman Municipality, American International School Abu Dhabi and Al Ain English Speaking School. Collection at Fujairah was conducted by Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation.

Volunteers from various corporate companies including McDonalds UAE, Al Futtaim Carillion, Abela & Co, Emirates Global Aluminum and Sharjah Radisson Blu Resort managed the collection activities at various sites.

The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) is a non-governmental professional working group founded in 1991 in Dubai, UAE. EEG is composed of corporate members, federal and local government agencies, reputed regional and international institutions, universities, colleges and schools, as well as students, individuals and families. With more than 2,000 volunteers from across UAE, EEG is considered as one of the most active environmental NGO's in the region.
