SHANGHAI, Sept. 22 (SMM) – Almost all Chinese enterprises related to scrap batteries and secondary lead in Shandong are closed at present due to environmental protection inspections starting on Sept. 18, SMM reports.
In the past few years, nearly one hundred secondary lead smelters were located in Shandong. However, only 30 secondary lead smelters were left to keep production following the first round of environmental protection inspections early this year.
Shandong’s total capacity for secondary lead is about 400,000 tonne per year in 2014 with actual production at 180,000 tonne per year or 15,000 tonne per month. Overall operation halt this time will tighten secondary lead supply and this should support secondary lead prices, SMM predicts.
