SHFE Copper Prices down by RMB 230/mt (Sept. 22, 2015)

Published: Sep 22, 2015 16:19 (GMT+8)
SHFE 1511 copper started at RMB 40,430/mt for night trading Monday and edged up to RMB 40,480/mt.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 22 (SMM) – SHFE 1511 copper started at RMB 40,430/mt for night trading Monday and edged up to RMB 40,480/mt. Later, the red metal dived to RMB 40,240/mt after meeting resistance at moving averages, to end at RMB 40,270/mt, up by RMB 120/mt. Positions grew 1,792 with trading volumes around 160,000 lots.

SHFE copper prices dropped after the open of Tuesday trading session with shorts gathering strength. The contract rebounded from RMB 40,000/mt due to growing long positions. Near session’ end, Chinese IF stock index retreated earlier gains and this triggered exit of longs in commodity market. As such, SHFE copper ended at a session low of RMB 39,920/mt, down by RMB 230/mt or 0.57%. Positions grew 5,598 to 190,326 with trading volumes down 220,000 lots.

Continuous rise in US dollar weighs down commodity prices. Besides, longs’ confidence weakened due to volatile crude oil prices and a slump in SHFE zinc prices. SHFE copper prices fall below RMB 40,000/mt. Hence, SHFE 1511 copper may drop to the 60-day moving average this evening despite the support at the 20-day moving average.

China Cast Aluminum Alloy Ingots Inventory Down 2,700 mt WoW, Ending Six-Week Buildup Trend
[SMM Aluminum Alloy Update] China's social inventory of cast aluminum alloy ingots stood at 31,800 mt this week, down 2,700 mt WoW, ending a six-week streak of inventory buildup. The shift to destocking this week was mainly driven by a widening spot-futures price spread and the release of pre-holiday stockpiling demand, with enterprises showing improved purchasing appetite. The National Day holiday arrives next week, and pre-holiday stockpiling demand may be further released. Social inventory is expected to continue destocking, but whether demand can be sustained after the holiday still warrants attention.

METLEN Invests €25M in Greek Recycled Aluminum Plant, Boosting Scrap Processing and Integration
[SMM Aluminum Express News] METLEN Energy & Metals will invest nearly €25 million in its EP.AL.ME. recycled aluminum operation in Greece, installing highly automated sorting, processing and melting equipment. The upgrade will allow EP.AL.ME., Greece’s largest independent recycled aluminum producer, to process more complex scrap streams, particularly post-consumer scrap recovered from end-of-life products that has previously been difficult to incorporate efficiently. The investment will more closely integrate EP.AL.ME. with METLEN’s Aluminium of Greece primary aluminum plant, with combined production expected to exceed 250,000 tonnes once the project is fully developed. EP.AL.ME. will act as the collection, sorting and scrap pre-processing hub, while Aluminium of Greece will incorporate recycled metal into higher-value aluminum products. METLEN said the integration should also improve margins at both operations.
