SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Illinois congressmen Mike Bost and Rodney Davis were presented the ‘2015 Congressional Steel Champion Award’ by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The awards are in recognition of their efforts to uplift the American steel industry and its workers. Mario Longhi, President and CEO, United States Steel Corporation and Thomas J. Gibson, President and CEO, AISI presented the award to the lawmakers.

Speaking on the occasion, Gibson noted that the country’s steel industry is passing through an extremely challenging phase with unfairly traded goods from other countries posing serious threats to domestic steel industry in the country. He commended the efforts of the congressmen in their fight to pass the legislation to improve antidumping and countervailing duty laws. He noted that the passing of the legislation has led to creation of a level-playing field for US domestic steel producers. Longhi too highlighted the leadership of these congressmen on various issues facing the steel industry and the thousands of workers associated with the industry.

Meantime, the legislation to raise antidumping and countervailing duties on steel products imports into the country was signed into law by President Obama on June 29th.

Representatives Mike Bost and Rodney Davis expressed gratitude on being selected for the prestigious award. They noted that the improvement in trade laws will promote fair competition for steel sector in the country. Further it will ensure longer term security for steel manufacturing jobs in the country.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 19 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
