SHFE 1601 nickel touched a low of RMB 81,190/mt after starting Wednesday night session at RMB 81,600/mt.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 20 (SMM) – SHFE 1601 nickel touched a low of RMB 81,190/mt after starting Wednesday night session at RMB 81,600/mt, to finish slightly lower at RMB 81,500/mt.

The most active contract opened at RMB 81,490/mt on Thursday and then moved lower to RMB 79,800/mt because of falling LME nickel prices and rising shorts. In the afternoon business, the contract reversed some losses but slipped again in response to Chinese declining shares, to end at RMB 80,650/mt, off 1.48%. Trading volumes grew 93,036 to 380,000 lots and positions also increased 22,028 to 176,000.

SHFE 1509 nickel finished the day at RMB 79,900/mt.

Copper Cathode Rod Inventories Diverge: Raw Materials Down, Finished Products Up Amid High Prices
[SMM Copper Cathode Rod Flash] Copper cathode rod enterprises' inventories showed a divergent pattern. Amid high copper prices and high premiums, enterprises only restocked as needed, with raw material inventories down MoM; downstream cargo pick-up slowed down, with finished product inventories up MoM.

Copper Cathode Rod Production Resumes, but Weak Demand and High Prices Dampen Outlook
[SMM Copper Cathode Rod Flash] The operating rate rose this week mainly due to production resumptions at enterprises that had previously halted or cut production. However, end-use demand remained weak, new orders were scarce, and the surge in copper prices suppressed downstream procurement. With insufficient rigid demand from end-users such as wire & cable and enamelled wire, enterprises adopted a wait-and-see stance and operating rates continued to weaken. SMM expects the operating rate of copper cathode rod enterprises to increase by 2.37 percentage points WoW next week.

[SMM Analysis] US Refined Copper Tariff Uncertainty Returns—What Does It Mean for Global Copper Scrap?
[SMM Analysis: US Refined Copper Tariff Uncertainty Returns—What Does It Mean for Global Copper Scrap?] US refined copper tariff uncertainty is reshaping global copper flows. If tariffs proceed, a wider COMEX-LME spread could draw more cathode into the US and support scrap demand elsewhere. If delayed or cancelled, the spread may narrow and weaken scrap payabilities. However, low global scrap inventories and tight VAT-invoiced supply in China make a sharp correction unlikely.
