Turkey dedicated ELV training centre could boost recycling standards

ANKARA (Scrap Monster): The Turkish car dismantlers’ Association-OTASAD has opened a dedicated training centre aimed to raise the operating standards among Turkish end-of-life vehicle (ELV) operators. The new facility called Otaset will work in partnership with the Turkish government and the industry to reduce the harmful environmental effects of car dismantling.

According to Günay Dar, President, Otasad, the facility is the first of its kind in Turkey and will help elevate the country’s recycling system to European standards. The facility is expected to raise the knowledge level about scrap vehicles and waste management. He added that necessary awareness and education in the management of scrap cars will lead to sound and healthy environment.

The training centre is located at Kocaeli, Istanbul in the premises of the Turkish ELV recycler Remer. The initiative is supported by the Dutch government. The implementation of the project is carried out in partnership with training expert Ameco and de-pollution equipment provider Seda. The project is financed by PSO-Environment program and supported by Dutch Auto Recycling Netherlands (ARN). The project aims to offer professional training in separation of functional parts of ELV and environment friendly recycling and scrapping mechanisms.

The facility is equipped with two de-pollution units, an array of useful tools, classrooms for training and overnight accommodation facilities. The project is expected to be completed in two-year period. Earlier in 2011, Turkey had enacted a legislation that introduces European standards on car dismantling activities.
