By area, Los Angeles has emerged as the largest exporter of US ferrous scrap, says latest data published by the US DOC.

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster):  By area, Los Angeles emerged as the largest exporter of ferrous scrap in the US during the period of initial six-months in 2015. The scrap exports from Los Angeles accounted for 20.5% of the total ferrous scrap exports by the US during this period.

The data published by the US Department of Commerce indicates that the region accounted for 1.415 million tonnes of export during Jan-June ’15. The exports from the region have dropped considerably from 1.772 million tonnes during the corresponding six-month period in 2014. The ferrous scrap exports from Los Angeles during June ’15 alone totaled 199,048 tonnes.

In second place was New York with 15% share during Jan-June ’15. The exports during the six-month period totaled 1.036 million tonnes. The percentage share of exports from New York improved marginally from 14.7% during the same period last year, though exports stood higher at 1.120 million tonnes during Jan-June ’14. The state topped during June ’15, exporting 223,821 tonnes.

San Francisco contributed 12.3% of the total US ferrous scrap imports during H1 2015. The export share dropped from 12.7% a year ago to 12.3% during this year. The cumulative exports from the region too dropped from 971,207 tonnes in H1 2014 to 850,103 tonnes in H1 2015. The exports from San Francisco totaled 126,356 tonnes during the month of June ’15.

The other major ferrous scrap exporting regions during Jan-June ’15 were Houston/Galveston (399,394 tonnes), Philadelphia (365,308 tonnes) and Columbia (343,140 tonnes).

Korea Zinc to Invest $6.6B in U.S. Critical Minerals Project
South Korea’s Korea Zinc plans to invest $6.6 billion to develop a major critical minerals smelter and U.S. headquarters in Tennessee, marking the state’s largest-ever private investment. The project will span Clarksville and Gordonsville, including a new manufacturing facility and the reopening of a former mine. The integrated smelter will produce 13 nonferrous metals such as zinc, copper, and lead, supporting key industries including defense, aerospace, and automotive. The project is expected to create over 740 jobs and reduce U.S. reliance on China for critical minerals. Developed in partnership with the U.S. government, which may take a 40% stake, construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with site preparation starting in 2026.

Lead Prices Surge, Battery Makers Hesitant to Buy High-Cost Supplies
[Secondary Lead Market Dynamics] Lead prices rose significantly. Downstream battery producers showed poor acceptance of high-priced supplies, and secondary refined lead offered at a premium of 25 yuan/mt against the SMM #1 lead average price delivered to plant was difficult to sell. Most downstream enterprises indicated that they were not short of supplies at present, with low purchase willingness.
