CHICAGO (Scrap Monster):  An industrial group comprising of thirteen electronics recycling companies has condemned the recently passed HB 1455 that modifies e-scrap laws in Illinois. In a letter sent to Illinois EPA, the group states that the bill’s view that CRT glasses are not recyclable, poses big challenge to the existing CRT recycling facilities in the state.

The group comprises of several prominent companies including AVA Recycling, Cascade Asset Management, CJD E-Cycling, Com2 Recycling Solutions, Comprenew, ECS Refining, Electronic Recyclers International, E-Scrap Technologies, Genesis Electronics Recycling, Global Environmental Services, Novotec, Sims Recycling Solutions and Supply-Chain Services.

Illinois had recently passed the above mentioned legislation that increases the volume of electronic waste that manufacturers must recycle. Also, manufacturers will have to pay more for recycling. The House Bill HB1455 hikes the recycling requirement for electronics manufacturers by nearly 13 million pounds over the next three years. In addition, the bill also allows recycling companies to store old CRT devices in a retrievable space, whose processing can be done at a later stage.

For this year, the bill proposes a total annual recycling goal of 30.8 million pounds for manufacturers of televisions and computer monitors. The manufacturers of other electronic devices will have an annual recycling goal of 15.8 million pounds. For 2016 and 2017, the manufacturers of televisions and computer monitors will have a recycling goal of 34.0 million pounds. The recycling goal set for manufacturers of other electronic devices is 15.6 million pounds.

The group has decided to express its dissent during the public hearing which is slated to be held on July 29th.
