CHARLOTTETOWN (Scrap Register): More than 3,000 metric tons of electronics waste have been recycled in Prince Edward Island, Canadian province, over the last five years, reported Canadian Press.

Cliff Hacking, president of the Electronic Products Recycling Association says that's approximately 465,000 TVs, computers, printers and other electronic devices diverted from landfills.

He says the recycling also yields a host of valuable materials such as steel, copper, and silver.

The association is a non-profit, industry-led organization that works with manufacturers, retailers and municipal governments to divert electronics from landfills.

The program is funded by an environmental handling fee that is charged on the sale of new electronic products.
