[Al Price] Will Aluminum Prices Rise If Production Cut Rumors Prove True

Rumors are flying around that China Power Investment Corporation will slash aluminum output by 620,000 tonnes at its three smelters by the end of July.

SHANGHAI, Jul. 20 (SMM) – Rumors are flying around that China Power Investment Corporation will slash aluminum output by 620,000 tonnes at its three smelters by the end of July. Will aluminum prices rise should such rumors turn out to be true?

These cuts, even if do occur, are insufficient to lift aluminum prices, given rapid expansions of low-cost capacity and slackening demand, SMM’s aluminum research team said.

Indonesia has officially exempted China, the United States, Australia and Canada from its stricter Foreign Exchange Proceeds from Natural Resource Exports (DHE SDA) retention requirements under Government Regulation No. 21/2026, citing existing bilateral trade agreements. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said, "If there is a bilateral agreement, we have to comply with it. We cannot violate the agreement," adding that the government is still identifying other countries that may qualify for similar exemptions.Exporters trading with these countries will be subject to more flexible foreign exchange retention rules, easing compliance with the policy that took effect on 1 June 2026.
