US weekly raw steel output drops 1.2%

As per the statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the raw steel production by the country declined slightly during the week ended June 20th, 2015.

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): As per the statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the raw steel production by the country declined slightly during the week ended June 20th, 2015. The production had registered marginal increase during the past two weeks prior to this.

The total raw steel output during the week ending June 20th was 1,726,000 net tons. The AISI data indicates that the US raw steel production has decreased by 1.2% during the week. This is in comparison with the previous week (ie., the week ended June 13th) production figures of 1,747,000 net tons. However, the weekly output represents a sharp decline of 8.6% in comparison with production of 1,889,000 net tons during same week the previous year.

The capability utilization rate of US steel makers was 73.0% during the week ended June 20th, 2015.

The capacity utilization rate has declined marginally when compared to 73.9% during the previous week (ie., the week ending June 13th). However, capacity utilization was considerably lower when compared with the rate of 78.5% during same week the previous year.

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is an association of North American steel producers. AISI's member companies represent over three quarters of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.

AISI determines its weekly raw steel production data based on weekly data from 50% of the domestic industry and estimates the rest using monthly production data.

On Sept 16, a fatal fall took the life of a subcontractor worker during roof work at Plant 2 of Korea Zinc's Onsan smelter in Ulsan, South Korea. The incident occurred on the roof of the condenser room, part of the roasting and sulphuric-acid system at the front end of the zinc flowsheet, while a ventilation fan was being installed. The accident arose from exterior construction work and did not damage the main smelting equipment. However, if the roasting-acid system is taken offline, the zinc roasters cannot sustain normal operation. No production cut, maintenance shutdown or suspension notice has been issued, and investigations are under way. Whether a work-stoppage order will be issued — and how broad its scope would be — and whether the company voluntarily halts the affected system for inspection remain unknown; the output impact is therefore uncertain. As a very rough sensitivity reference based on the smelter's nameplate capacity of roughly 640,000 t/y, a 3-7 day shutdown would imply a volume impact on the order of several thousand tonnes — but this is an order-of-magnitude estimate only, and the actual impact depends on the scope and duration of any inspection-related halt. Coming in a year when several overseas smelters (Nexa's Cajamarquilla, Glencore's Kazzinc and Young Poong's Seokpo) have already been disrupted amid a tight global refined-zinc market, the incident may lend short-term bullish sentiment to zinc, while the actual impact on output requires continued monitoring.
