India Non Ferrous scrap imports to grow rapidly, says BIR Convention

ABU DHABI (Scrap Monster): The recently held BIR Convention in Dubai highlighted India as a leading importer of non ferrous scrap. The imports by the country are likely to grow in the forthcoming years.

According to speakers at the Convention, India has become a leading importer of aluminum scrap from the Middle East. Despite high import duties, the country’s aluminum scrap imports have grown significantly during recent years. The aluminum scrap imports have surged nearly 60% over the three year period from 2010 to 2013. The aluminum scrap imports which had amounted to 456,336 in 2010 had touched 724,106 in 2013. The Convention predicts rapid growth in imports on account of expansion of auto industry in the country. The country is expected to continue its dependence on imported scrap, as long as it achieves self-sufficiency in scrap generation.

The meeting also highlighted the emergence of the Middle East region as a key producer of scrap materials. The governments in other Middle East countries including UAE, Qatar, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have started giving big push to make general public aware about the benefits of recycling. However, more focus on export scrap sales demand better implementation of legislation regulating the transboundary movement of materials.

The BIR Convention noted that worldwide non ferrous scrap industry is seen facing numerous challenges such as low scrap generation and lower collection volumes. In addition, intense completion has resulted in lower margins

The meeting was presided by newly elected Nonferrous Division President David Chiao of Uni-All Group Ltd., based in Atlanta.

In August 2026, China's total monthly sulphur imports were 272,323.414 mt in physical content, down 29.34% MoM and down 65.03% YoY, with the main import sources being the UAE, South Korea, Canada, Japan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines. China's total monthly sulphur exports were 48 mt in physical content, down 96.34% MoM and up 26.32% YoY, with the main export destinations being Indonesia and South Korea.
