Which foreign nickel brand will become the first one to be deliverable on the SHFE?

SHANGHAI, May 22 (SMM) – Which foreign nickel brand will become the first one to be deliverable on the SHFE?

So far, three major foreign brands are trading in China’s domestic nickel market, namely Russia’s Norilsk nickel, Norway’s Nikkelverk nickel and Japan’s Sumitomo nickel.

According to SMM sources, Norilsk nickel is the first foreign brand submitting the application for deliveries on the SHFE, followed by Nikkelverk nickel and Sumitomo nickel.

Will Norilsk nickel become the first to be deliverable on the SHFE?

Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest nickel producer, does not meet the SHFE’s requirements, with table below showing comparison of Jinchuan nickel and the three major brands in Ni and Co content.

It was reported that Norilsk Nickel’s high officials came to Shanghai to discuss with the exchange over its brand registration. The two parties had reached consensus in some aspects, but issues still existed, suggesting that it will still take time for its successful register on the exchange.

Compared with Norilsk Nickel, Nikkelverk nickel and Sumitomo nickel have no problems in quality standards set by the SHFE. The timing of submission will determine date of its deliveries on the SHFE.

Hence, SMM foresees that Nikkelverk nickel will become the first, and follow by Sumitomo nickel, and Norilsk nickel to become the last of the three to be deliverable on the SHFE.

The following table shows imports of the three major foreign brands by China in 2014 and the first three months of 2015, according to SMM data.

Lead prices were in the doldrums, while secondary lead smelters maintained firm offers due to losses. The mainstream spot order ex-factory prices including tax narrowed the discount to the SMM #1 lead average price by 100 yuan/mt, shifting to a premium of 0–25 yuan/mt, with some smelters halting offers and sales.

Pre-holiday stockpiling by downstream enterprises had largely concluded, and a few had already entered the holiday period, completely suspending procurement. Next week, secondary lead smelters will enter a concentrated wave of production halts and holidays, resulting in sluggish trading activity in the spot market. Offers for spot refined lead orders were sparse, with prices moving in line with the market.

Sluggish Transactions in Domestic Secondary Crude Lead Market, Prices at 15,250-15,400 Yuan/mt
The domestic secondary crude lead market experienced sluggish transactions. As of February 6, 2026, the ex-factory tax-exclusive offers for domestic secondary crude lead stood at 15,250-15,400 yuan/mt. Downstream refined lead and alloy smelters gradually entered the holiday period, showing weak stockpiling willingness. Overseas lead ingot suppliers basically halted transactions with China due to poor consumption in the Chinese market, with only some previously concluded shipments maintaining normal in-transit transportation. The trading atmosphere in the secondary crude lead market will continue to weaken next week.
