Zinc consumption is expected to grow by 3-4% in 2015, SMM Lead&Zinc Summit reported.

SHANGHAI, May 20 (SMM) – Zinc consumption is expected to grow by 3-4% in 2015, SMM Lead&Zinc Summit reported.

“The consumption growth is expected to slow at 3-4% this year, and the galvanizing sector will be a major contributor,” said Zhang Wanbao, general manager of Inner Mongolia Xing'an Copper and Zinc Smelting.

Consumption from die-casters, however, will be weak, Zhang noted at the 2015 SMM Lead&Zinc Summit, saying many small die-casters went bankruptcy.

“Orders at large die-casters are decent, but conditions at small ones are not good,” added Annette Huang, chief representative at International Zinc Association.

Demand at zinc oxide producers is expected to change little from 2014, said Wang Yanlong, president of Weifang Longda Zinc Industry.

Most of other participants expressed optimistic outlook over zinc consumption in 2015 at the summit in Chengdu.

However, after the selling activity subsided, upstream quotations and the market center gradually returned to normal levels, supported by cost factors. Looking ahead, as the Chinese New Year holiday approaches, market activity is expected to remain subdued, and high-grade NPI prices are projected to hover at highs with limited fluctuations.
