Global platinum recycling is forecast to reach 2,110 kilo ounce during this year, representing annual growth of 3%.

LONDON (Scrap Register): Global platinum recycling is forecast to reach 2,110 kilo ounce during this year, representing annual growth of 3%, which is a similar pace to 2014, as per latest figures from World Platinum Investment Council.

According to WPIC, jewellery recycling is expected to fall by 6% to an estimated 725 kilo ounce as lower prices are currently discouraging the return of pieces.

However, auto catalyst recycling is estimated to increase by 10% to 1,380 kilo ounce, easing modestly from the 12% growth rate seen last year .

The majority of the growth will come from Europe where increased numbers of platinum - loaded diesel catalysts are returning to the market. Recycling should also be lifted by the return of material not collected in H 2 ’ 14 when the price fell significantly .

Magna Reports PGM-Bearing Drill Intervals at Levack

Magna Mining reported a 2.1-metre downhole interval at its past-producing Levack mine in Ontario grading 17.5 g/t platinum, palladium and gold combined, alongside 9.5% copper and 2.6% nickel. A separate West Main interval returned 4.6 metres grading 3.5 g/t of the three precious metals combined, alongside 1.7% copper and 4.0% nickel. The results help Magna assess areas that could contribute metal following a potential restart. They do not establish separate platinum or palladium grades, additional reserves or production; a formal restart decision remains pending.

Spot platinum was down 0.6% at US$1,786.43/oz and palladium was down 0.4% at US$1,296.40/oz at 04:54 GMT on 22 September, Reuters reported. These are intraday indications, not closing prices. The modest declines matter for near-term physical valuations and hedging. The snapshot alone does not establish a change in PGM mine supply or industrial demand.
