MIDDLESEX (Scrap Monster): The Department of Environmental Conservation’s Compliance and Enforcement Division has reached a settlement with Newport, Vermont based Wright Brothers Recycling, Inc. on dispute with respect to environmental violation. As per the settlement, the company has agreed to pay $8,000 as penalty for operating its salvage yard without having a valid license from authorities.
The Agency staff had conducted an inspection at the metal recycling company’s facility earlier during June 2014. The inspection revealed that the facility was operating as a salvage yard. As per state law, the facility must possess Certificate of Registration issued by the Department to operate, establish, or maintain a salvage yard. For obtaining the certificate, one needs to possess a Certificate of Approved Location issued by the municipality in which the salvage yard is located.
Verification of documents proved that the company had been operating as a salvage yard since 2012, without obtaining valid Certificate of Registration from the Department of Environmental Conservation. The agency then issued a notice of violation to the company. In response to the notice, the company applied and obtained the Certificate of Registration in July 2014 itself.
Later, as per order by the Environmental Court, Wright Brothers Recycling, Inc. had agreed to pay $8,000 in penalty for violation of state law. The company is allowed to make the payment in four installments of $2,000 each payable before 15th of June, July, August and September this year. Any violation of the agreement may result in imposition of further penalties.
