China’s alumina imports tumbled 42.1% from a year ago to 218,000 tonnes in March, customs data showed.
SHANGHAI, Apr. 23 (SMM) – China’s alumina imports tumbled 42.1% from a year ago to 218,000 tonnes in March, customs data showed.

SMM attributes the decline due to growing supply and price attractiveness of domestic alumina.

China’s metallurgical-grade alumina output increased 8.7% year-on-year to 4.7 million tonnes in March.

Domestic alumina was more attractive than imported material. Chinese refineries cut offers against mounting inventories, sending the average alumina ex-works prices in Henan and Shanxi down to RMB 2,637 yuan/tonne and 2,597 yuan/tonne, SMM data showed. Imported alumina traded at 2,670 yuan/tonne at the Port of Lianyungang.

Imports are expected to stay low in April, since drivers behind lower imports will persist.
