BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by North American countries edged lower by 6.8% during the month of February year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by Canada during February this year was 1.040 Mt, higher than the February 2014 production of 985,000 tonnes by 5.6%. The US produced 6.261 Million tonnes of crude steel, 7.9% down when compared to 6.802 Million tonnes production achieved during February 2014. The total crude steel production by Mexico plunged 8.1% from 1.594 Mt in Feb ‘14 to 1.465 Mt in February this year.

The Cuban crude steel production declined by 8.8% to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in February this year, up nearly 19% when compared with 8,000 tonnes a year before. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in February, down 8.4% from a year ago. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago plunged by 44.3% in February this year to 32,000 tonnes from 57,000 tonnes during same month the previous year.

The following table provides cumulative crude steel output for the first two months in 2015 in comparison with those during same period in 2014.

Chinese Team Sets New Record in CZTSSe Thin-Film PV Tech, Hits 16.6% Efficiency
Recently, the team led by Meng Qingbo at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, once again set a new record in new-type thin-film PV copper-zinc-tin-sulfur-selenium (CZTSSe) technology, raising the battery’s certified efficiency to 16.6%, marking the technology’s official crossing of the critical threshold for industrialisation from 15 to 16. Composed of common, low-cost elements such as copper, zinc, and tin, CZTSSe materials not only avoid reliance on rare metals but also offer strong resistance to space radiation. At present, the team has also completed the development of high performance flexible batteries and modules, and this technology is expected to achieve large-scale application in fields such as low-Earth-orbit satellite internet, space-based energy bases, and aerospace equipment in the future. This progress not only established China’s internationally leading position in this field, but also opened up strategic, high-value-added application prospects for tin metal in new energy and deep-space exploration.
