NEW YORK (Scrap Register): United States hot rolled cold (HRC) steel weekly average prices plummeted by $22 a short ton week-on-week to $493 a short ton in the week ended February 27, as per The Steel Index.

A service center source mentioned they were no longer bidding for material owing to high inventories which are expected to last into May, possibly June.

It is a similar story with many traders having retreated from buying imports given the heightened risk of reselling material into a weak domestic market experiencing falling prices. On the other hand, one mill executive reiterated his view that the market was close to a trough.

The prices of major stainless steel scrap commodities like 201 SS, 301 SS, 309 SS were unchanged on Scrap Register US Price Index last week.

Alvance Boosts Aluminium Output by 10% at UK's Only Primary Plant, Enters US Market Amid Tariff Changes
[SMM Aluminum Express News] Alvance British Aluminium has boosted output by ~10% at its Lochaber smelter in Fort William, Scotland (UK’s only primary aluminium plant), thanks to recent US tariff changes. The GFG Alliance-owned facility (48,000 tpy capacity, hydro-powered) now exports about half its production to the US for the first time. Managing Director Tom Uppington: “We increased production in response to shifting trade flows after US tariffs, entering the US market while serving UK and European customers.” President Trump set a 50% global tariff on steel/aluminium imports, but the UK secured a preferential 25% rate (vs. 50% for Canada), making UK metal more competitive. The US still relies on imports for automotive and aerospace sectors.
