Thailand's scrap imports surged 43% in 2014

The latest import statistics indicate that the scrap imports by Thailand during the entire year 2014 rose significantly over the year.

BEIJING (Scrap Monster): The latest import statistics indicate that the scrap imports by Thailand during the entire year 2014 rose significantly over the year. However, the scrap imports during Dec ’14 declined sharply when compared with the previous year.

The scrap imports by Thailand during 2014 totaled 1.383 million tons. The imports surged higher by 42.7% when compared with the scrap imports during the previous year. The country had imported 970,000 tons of scrap during the entire year 2013. On the other hand, the scrap imports during the month of Dec ’14 alone dropped 21.9% over the previous year. The Dec ’14 scrap imports by the country totaled 85,000 tons during the month of December last year.

The largest scrap exporter to Thailand during 2014 was the US. The scrap imports by Thailand from the US totaled 839,000 tons. The scrap imports from the country accounted for nearly 60% of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the year. The scrap exports from the US to Thailand surged higher by over 1500% when compared with the imports during the previous year.

The second largest scrap exporter to Thailand during the year was Australia. The imports from the country totaled 382,000 tons, accounting for over one-fourth of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the full year. In third place was Philippines with 70,000 tons, whose exports to Thailand jumped higher by 6.9%.
