ALBANY (Scrap Monster): Novelis Inc.,-the Atlanta-head quartered global aluminum company announced that it has completed massive investment at its Oswego automotive scrap recycling facility in New York. The $48 million investment is expected to equip the company in catering to the growing demand for aluminum automotive sheets.

The recent investment includes construction of 81,000 square-foot building to process, sort and store automotive scrap aluminum generated by the Oswego aluminum plant. Significant improvements were carried out in road infrastructure and facilities. The investment will help the facility to meet the increased demand for lightweight aluminum components from North American automakers. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to process nearly 10,000 metric tons of recycled scrap per month.

The regulatory policy in the US to cut carbon emissions may likely prompt automakers to use more aluminum. More vehicles are likely to have aluminum bodies. The company is already a supplier of aluminum sheets to Ford’s Ford-150 pickup truck- one of the most popular models in North America. The new emission rules in Europe may boost the use of aluminum sheet in automobiles by nearly five-fold to 1.8 million tons by 2020. The sheet sales to carmakers including Audi and Ford are likely to rise over three-fold.

Over the past five years, Novelis has made investments of nearly $400 million and has hired over 430 employees at the Oswego facility. Also, the company expects to create at least 250 more jobs at the facility by 2020.
