NEW YORK (Scrap Register): United States shredded scrap prices edged up by $1 a long ton week-on-week to $341 a long ton (delivered mill) in the week ended January 02, as per the latest figures released by the The Steel Index.

The US Midwest has seen the anticipated scrap-flow contraction come to pass, with buy activity on the rise by mills seeking to avoid joining the mass-market negotiations beginning in earnest next week.

The weather has turned several notches colder, though the Midwest seems to have escaped the worst, for now, with the most frigid weather settling to the West. There is some dissent about how prices will move this week, for now the index rose a dollar to $341 a long ton.
