Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show China’s total copper output in May hit 615,000 mt, up 5.31% MoM.

SHANGHAI, June. 20 (SMM) – Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show China’s total copper output in May hit 615,000 mt, up 5.31% MoM. YTD output through May also grew 6.76% YoY to 2.85 million mt. Output at the 24 Chinese copper smelters surveyed by SMM rose in May by 13,400 mt to 474,600 mt from April’s level. Output at Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group returned to normal after completion of maintenance. Jinchuan Group and Northern Copper Industrial Company also contributed to the rise in output during May after its new capacity came online.

Chinese smelters have been actively importing copper concentrate with spot TC/RCs for imported copper concentrate holding above USD 100/mt. As a result, concentrate imports grew 17.3% YoY during the first five months of the year, compared with a 28.72% drop in 2013. Imports of anode copper/blister copper grew at the fastest pace, rising 20% YoY during the period January to May. These high raw material imports may signal an increase in refined copper output during the second half of the year.
