Inbound shipments of nickel ore to China from the Philippines are expected to reach 45 million wet tonnes (wmt) in 2014, Shanghai Metals Market foresees.
SHANGHAI, Sept. 28 (SMM) – Inbound shipments of nickel ore to China from the Philippines are expected to reach 45 million wet tonnes (wmt) in 2014, Shanghai Metals Market foresees.

The Philippines has become the leading supplier of laterite nickel ore to China after Indonesia introduced its export ban on unprocessed ore early this year.

Higher profit following strong price gains of nickel ore has encouraged a large number of mines in the Philippines to increase production or restart idled operation, SMM learns.

China’s nickel ore imports from the Philippines rose 64% year-on-year to 17.30 million wmt during the first seven months, according to China Customs.

SMM learns the Philippines exported 8.55 million wmt of nickel ore during August, its highest monthly exports for the year, and 8.22 million mt of the ore went to China.

According to data in 2013, the country’s nickel ore exports will likely grow further during September and October.

Hence, SMM estimates that China’s nickel ore imports from the Philippines to hit 45 million wmt in 2014, and 45% of them will grade at Ni≥1.5%.
