China’s Alumina Imports to Slow in H2 Following 67.82% Spike in H1

Data Analysis 04:49:34PM Aug 05, 2014 Source:SMM
SHANGHAI, Aug. 5 (SMM) – China’s alumina imports will slow for the remainder of the year following a 67.82% year-on-year surge in H1 as prices for imported alumina will follow primary aluminum up, Shanghai Metals Market foresees.

Inbound shipments in June, though rocketing 307.75% from a year ago to 372,300 tonnes, did retreat from April’s peak, bringing imports to 2.76 million tonnes throughout the first six months, China customs data showed. Port stocks hit over 1 million tonnes at one point as domestic traders ramped up imports in response to Indonesia’s export ban and production cuts in China. This, along with depressed prices for imported alumina, curtailed appetite for imports, SMM understood.
