BEIJING (Scrap Monster): The latest import statistics indicate that the scrap imports by Thailand during May this year rose significantly over the year. Also, the scrap imports witnessed a sharp increase when compared with the imports during the previous month.

The scrap imports by Thailand during the month of May this year totaled 170,000 tons. The imports surged higher by 68.6% when compared with the scrap imports during the same month a year ago. Also, the scrap imports rose 63.6% over the previous month. Thailand had imported 104,000 tons of scrap during the month of April this year.

The largest scrap exporter to Thailand during May ’14 was Australia. The scrap imports by Thailand from Australia totaled 59,000 tons. The scrap imports from Australia accounted for nearly 35% of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the month. The scrap exports from Australia to Thailand went higher by 21.1% during the month when compared with the imports during May ’13.

The second largest scrap exporter to Thailand during the month was the US. The imports from the US totaled 45,000 tons, accounting for nearly 27% of the total scrap imports by the country during the month.

The country’s scrap imports during initial five months of the year totaled 448,000 tons. The scrap imports were 26.4% higher upon comparison with the imports during the similar five-month period last year.

The scrap imports by Thailand are projected to touch 1.08 million tons during the entire year 2014.
