Prices for high-grade nickel pig iron (NPI) are bottoming out and starting to rebound as production cuts in Inner Mongolia in response to local environmental efforts tightened supply.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 17 (SMM) – Prices for high-grade nickel pig iron (NPI) are bottoming out and starting to rebound as production cuts in Inner Mongolia in response to local environmental efforts tightened supply.

The prices for high-grade NPI added 10 yuan today to 960-980 yuan ($157-161) per nickel unit, according to SMM’s pricing data. Those compared with ex-works prices of as low as 935 yuan per nickel unit reported in Inner Mongolia last month.

Many NPI producers in Ulaan Chab of Inner Mongolia closed down in early December after environmental protection inspections were carried out on November 16, SMM reported earlier. Ulaan Chab accounts for over 80% of NPI output in Inner Mongolia, a major production region of the stainless-steel-making material in China.

One-month long suspended operations in Ulaan Chab reduced high-grade NPI output by 13,000 tonnes, in nickel content, according to SMM’s research team.

China’s output of high-grade NPI nationwide decreased 0.99% month-on-month to 39,140 tonnes in December, yet increased around 40% year-on-year for the whole of 2013 to 418,740 tonnes.
