SHANGHAI, Aug. 6 (SMM) – Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) undertook a survey of 21 copper wire rod producers, finding that 90% of them expected orders to remain flat in August.

Demand for enameled wire and electronic wire remained sluggish, while consumption of wire and cable will not see noticeable growth until September, leaving little impetus for any increase in copper wire rod consumption. That, combined with the absence of new projects and tight liquidity for projects of both government and enterprises, leads most producers to believe that copper wire rod demand will be stable, with no surge in sales expected in Q3.

The remaining 10% of producers predicted declining orders in August, noting that the tight cash flows may erode downstream buying interest. In addition, the sweltering summer has hindered advances of outdoor projects, with deliveries of some orders postponed, negatively affecting operating rates in August.
