SHANGHAI, Apr. 24 (SMM) – According to China Customs, China imported 4.56 million mt of bauxite during March, down 12.02% YoY. YTD imports through March hit 13.96 million mt, up 8.88% YoY.
China’s imports of Indonesian bauxite fell 22.05% YoY to 3.38 million mt during March, and dropped 11.93% YoY to 9.17 million mt during Q1 this year.
China’s imports of Australian bauxite fell 2.35% YoY to 782,200 mt in March, but grew 16.65% YoY to 2.67 million mt during Q1.
China’s imports of Indian bauxite hit 400,400 mt in March, a 719.45% surge, and 1.52 million mt during Q1, over 30 fold of the same period last year. The CIF price for Indian bauxite averaged USD 56/mt in March, USD 49/mt for Indonesian bauxite, and USD 55/mt for Australian bauxite.
The Indonesian government’s restrictions on bauxite exports remain. Traders say some bauxite mines in Indonesia have not yet resumed full operations. Chinese alumina producers stepped up purchases of bauxite from Australia and India out of fear that the Indonesian government may impose a complete export ban on unprocessed bauxite in 2014.
