SHANGHAI, Apr. 16 (SMM) – Demand for high-grade silicon metal has been weakening both at home and in oversea market since the global economic downturn. The depressed demand resulted in massive production halts of silicon metal producers in Yunnan province, with low-grade silicon metal also rarely found in Kunming. However, the large amount of high-grade silicon metal inventories built last year and limited consumption left spot supply ample. Some silicon metal producers started cutting prices for high-grade silicon metal out of fear that prices may be dragged down given the approaching high-water season. In this context, silicon metal prices may fall again.
