China Manganese Ore Market Movement (2013-4-9)

SMM Insight 02:27:10PM Apr 09, 2013 Source:SMM

SHANGHAI, Apr. 9 (SMM) -

Overseas News:
China’s seamless steel pipe and tube exports have slipped into unprecedented predicament due to trade protectionism by the European Commission. Data from China’s Ministry of Commerce show that China’s seamless steel tubes and pipes exported to Europe in 2012 that involve anti-dumping investigations from the European Commission were worth USD 91.53 million. There have been seven trade remedy investigations into China’s steel product exports since the beginning of this year, which were initiated by Canada, the EU, and Australia and so on. These steel products cover galvanized steel wire, hot rolled steel plate, seamless steel tubes and pipes and many others.

Domestic market:
Spot manganese ore markets at ports were dominated by wait-and-see sentiment on Tuesday. It is speculated that power tariff will be revised down for large industrial enterprises in southwest China. However, SMM has confirmed that China Southern Power Grid has not yet received notice on lowering electricity price and that power price for dry season is still in place at the moment. Manganese ore prices at ports have shown signs of stopping falling due to expectations for lower power tariff during rainy season and rising CIF prices. Manganese alloy producers remain cautious about purchasing. Some market players understand that steel producers will push for lower input costs after manganese alloy production costs fall. Therefore, operating rates at manganese alloy producers still depend on demand from steel mills.

Transactions:
Trading was muted in China’s southern and northern ports. Manganese alloy producers mostly inquired prices without actually buying, while traders were reluctant to sell at lower prices.

Summary:
Steel markets have unexpectedly rebounded, but recovery is still subject to fundamentals. The China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) predicts that China’s crude steel output in late March will exacerbate oversupply pressure. Steel producers have but to push down manganese alloy prices against overcapacity and losses.
