China Manganese Ore Market Movement (2013-1-16)

SMM Insight 02:56:01PM Jan 16, 2013 Source:SMM

SHANGHAI, Jan. 16 (SMM) – Inquiries in China’s manganese ore market increased on January 16 but transactions were limited with quotations high. Most small and medium traders reported squeezed profits or even sold goods at losses for maintaining relationship with regular clients. Alloy producers were forced to cut or halt production before any upbeat news was seen given the climbing ore prices. SME alloy producers contacted by SMM reflected that spot prices for manganese ore at ports were unacceptable. With price difference between spot ore at ports and futures ore narrowing, some market players opted to wait on the sidelines to avoid risk.

Some 10,000-20,000 mt of manganese ore from Gabon arrived at port of Qinzhou, with quotations for spot goods held high. In north China ports, prices on Australia manganese lumps (Mn46-48%), lumps from South Africa (Mn38% Fe5%), and lumps from Gabon continued to trend up, with high-end prices at RMB 47.5-48/mtu, RMB 40.5-41/mtu, and RMB 41/mtu, respectively.

Transactions in south China ports were limited with large alloy producers completing the pre-holiday replenishments, while deals in north China ports were mainly made for lumps from South Africa (carbonate manganese ore).
