Secondary Lead Smelters Buy Scrap Batteries Actively, Prices Hold Steady ahead of Holiday

SHANGHAI, Jan. 9 (SMM) – SMM has learned that large secondary lead smelters were aggressively purchasing scrap batteries ahead of the Chinese New Year holiday.

As most scrap battery recyclers close for Chinese New Year holiday each year, secondary lead smelters always replenished scrap batteries a month before the holiday to ensure normal production subsequently. Although lead demand from lead-acid battery producers was sluggish this year, demand from downstream buyers of large secondary lead smelters remained relatively stable, combined with the upcoming high demand season, many of these smelters are maintaining normal operations.

Many enterprises reported difficulty in scrap battery recycling in winter as the liquid in batteries get frozen easily. Despite a rush for purchasing scrap batteries, their prices did not rise since #1 lead prices have remained low at RMB 14,650-14,800/mt for 14 trading days since December.
