According to China Customs, China imported 2.14 million mt of bauxite during October, down 29.77% YoY.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 26 (SMM) – According to China Customs, China imported 2.14 million mt of bauxite during October, down 29.77% YoY. YTD imports through October hit 32.47 million mt, also down 8.74% YoY.

China imported 1.05 million mt of bauxite from Indonesia in October, down 55.16% YoY, and 730,000 mt from Australia, up 2.78% YoY. China also imported 290,000 mt of bauxite from India, 50,000 mt from Malaysia, and 30,000 mt from Guyana.

China’s imports of Indonesian bauxite fell sharply after Indonesia imposed restrictions on bauxite exports in June. However, bauxite imports from Indonesia began to increase from August and hit 1.05 million mt in October, up 66.67% from September. The growth in Indonesian imports is mainly because domestic alumina producers have signed agreements with Indonesian bauxite producers to build alumina plants in that country, which allows Chinese producers to obtain export quotas for raw ore.

Uncertainty still exists over Indonesia’s exports policies in the short term. Most of the domestic bauxite importers are alumina producers and some bauxite traders are still standing on the sidelines. Only after Indonesia’s exports policies become clear will China’s imports of Indonesian bauxite return to normal.
