Rains may cause flooding this week in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, where BHP Billion Ltd. (BHP) and Rio Tinto Group operate, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Rainfall from 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) to 150 millimeters with isolated heavier falls may occur in the Pilbara area, the bureau said today. A number of roads have been closed to traffic with the exception of four-wheel drives in the Shire of East Pilbara, it said.

“Localized flooding is possible today in the central and eastern areas of the Pilbara, becoming widespread Tuesday onwards,” the bureau said. Flooding may affect Port Hedland, Karratha, Nullagine and Newman, according to the bureau.

Flooding sometimes disrupts mining in Pilbara, the site of at least seven iron ore mines operated by BHP and 13 by Rio. Port Hedland harbor is used by BHP and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. (FMG) to export iron ore.
