(SMM) According to data from China Customs, domestic coal imports in September were 19.12 million mt, up 25.1% YoY. YTD coal imports were 123.43 million mt, up 1.9% YoY.
Anthracite imports were 3.26 million mt, up 43.4% YoY; YTD imports were 26.98 million mt, up 39.0% YoY. Coking coal imports were 3.89 million mt, down 6.6% YoY, while YTD imports were 30.38 million mt, down 9.4% YoY. Thermal coal imports were 6.87 million mt, up 37.8% YoY; YTD imports were 33.34 million mt, down 15.9% YoY.
Coking coal imports were down because coking coal output from Australia dropped due to the flood in Queensland this year. But as capacity ramped up after the disaster, and due to growing domestic coke capacity, coking coal imports will increase to the previous level.
