SHANGHAI,Aug.22,(CBI China) -- On August 18th, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced an investigation into dumping and illegal subsidy activities related to aluminum extrusions originating in or exported from China.  A second  investigation on the industrial market economy status was also initiated, according to the Bureau of Fair Trade for Imports and Exports of the Ministry of Commerce of China.

The period of anti-dumping and market economic status under scrutiny is from 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008, and the period for illegal subsidies is from 1 January 2007 to 10 June 2008.  CBSA has issued questionnaires to the Chinese Government and exporters, due back September 24th 2008.  This is the eighth investigation of this kind for Chinese products, but is the first case involving the market economic status in the non-iron and steel industries in China since 2004 for Canada.

Products involved in the investigations include hollow profiles of aluminum, bars, rods and other profiles of aluminum alloy, tubes and pipe of aluminum alloy.

Enterprises engaged aluminum extrusions exports to Canada told CBI that the impact of the investigations on current exports was limited, but the future impact remained unknown.  According to Chinese Customs statistics in 2007, exports of Chinese aluminum extrusions to Canada accounted only 2.5% of China’s total exports, but many large enterprises were involved in exports to Canada.  A large number of exporters worried it may cause other counties to conduct similar investigations, if Canada rules against the Chinese imports.
