SMM China Al Imports and Exports Data Analysis April 2011

SHANGHAI, May 30 (SMM) --
Bauxite:
According to China Customs, China’s bauxite imports set a new high of 4.14 million mt during April, up 15.7% MoM and 72.16% YoY. SMM sources report alumina producers in Shandong province using imported bauxite as raw material have expanded capacity rapidly since 2Q, which is helping fuel rising bauxite imports. According to SMM estimates, monthly imports of bauxite will remain above 4 million mt for the foreseeable future.  

Alumina:
Customs data shows China’s alumina imports fell to 130.6 kt during April, setting a new record low. SMM predicts China’s total alumina imports will be 2 million mt during 2011.

Aluminum Semis:
According to China Customs, China’s exports of aluminum alloy during April were 54,521 mt, down 12.2% MoM. Purchases of China’s aluminum alloy ingot by Japanese enterprises fell significantly during April since Japanese automobile manufacturers cut production following the earthquake in March. According to customs data, Japan’s imports of aluminum alloy from China were 29,588 mt during April, down 11.7% MoM. SMM sources report Mitsubishi Corporation, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and other Japanese aluminum alloy importers cut orders in March. Shortages in April of auto parts needed for automobile assembly further dampened exports of aluminum alloy, while some overseas enterprises also delayed delivery dates, causing further declines in exports of aluminum alloy.
